Kinematics of Extremely Faint Dwarf Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract. We present the results of deep, high velocity resolution (∼1.6 kms−1) Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21cm observations of extremely faint (MB > −12.5) dwarf irregular galaxies. We find that all of our sample galaxies show systematic large scale velocity gradients, unlike earlier studies which found chaotic velocity fields for such faint galaxies. For some of the sample galaxies the velocity fields are completely consistent with ordered rotation, though the peak circular velocities are comparable to the observed random motions. These are the faintest known galaxies with such regular kinematics. We present (“asymmetric drift” corrected) rotation curves and mass models (including fits for Isothermal and NFW halos) for some of these galaxies and discuss the implications for hierarchical models of galaxy formation.

GMRT study of extremely faint dwarf irregular galaxies
We present results of deep, high velocity resolution (∼1.6 kms−1) Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21 cm-line observations of a sample of extremely faint (MB > −12.5) dwarf irregular galaxies. Unlike previous studies, we find large scale velocity gradients in even the faintest galaxies of our sample i.e. their velocity fields are not “chaotic”. For some of our sample galaxies, where th...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Spectroscopy of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Least Evolved Galaxies: Ursa Major II and Coma Berenices
We present spectra of six metal-poor stars in two of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way (MW), Ursa Major II, and Coma Berenices obtained with the Keck/High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES). These observations include the first high-resolution spectroscopic observations of extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −3.0) stars not belonging to the MW halo field star population. We ...
متن کاملThe Kinematics of the Ultra-faint Milky Way Satellites: Solving the Missing Satellite Problem
We present Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of stars in 8 of the newly discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way. We measure the velocity dispersions of Canes Venatici I, Canes Venatici II, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Leo IV, Leo T, Ursa Major I, and Ursa Major II from the velocities of 18− 214 stars in each galaxy and find dispersions ranging from 3.3 to 7.6 km s. The 6 galaxies with ab...
متن کاملThe local space density of dwarf galaxies
We estimate the luminosity function of Ðeld galaxies over a range of 10 mag for ([22 \ M BJ \ [12 km s~1 Mpc~1) by counting the number of faint APM galaxies around Stromlo-APM redshift H 0 \ 100 survey galaxies at known distance. The faint end of the luminosity function rises steeply at M BJ B [15, implying that the space density of dwarf galaxies is at least 2 times larger than predicted by a ...
متن کامل1 0 Ju l 2 00 9 The Aromatic Features in Very Faint Dwarf Galaxies
We present optical and mid-infrared photometry of a statistically complete sample of 29 very faint dwarf galaxies (Mr > −15 mag) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic sample and observed in the mid-infrared with Spitzer IRAC. This sample contains nearby (redshift z . 0.005) galaxies three magnitudes fainter than previously studied samples. We compare our sample with other star-forming galaxies t...
